What is naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a system of medicine that emphasises supporting the body’s own healing abilities with the use of a variety of natural healing modalities to establish ideal conditions for health and bring the body back into a state of balance (or homeostasis).

How can naturopathy help you?

As a Naturopath I consider your body holistically and I help to identify the root cause of your health concerns. This means we explore your genetics, physical and mental health, diet, lifestyle, environmental, social and spiritual factors that contribute to your health and wellbeing. To assist in identifying the root cause of your health complaints, I use scientifically validated methods to examine the functioning of various body systems. This may include physical examinations, nutritional analysis, pathology investigations, advanced biometrics and functional testing.

Drawing from the best available evidence, as well as from my own lived experience, I help to educate you (‘Docre’) on your unique biology so that you have the knowledge to be your own best health advocate and feel empowered and motivated, knowing the ‘why’ behind the naturopathic recommendations. Working collaboratively with you, I create a holistic health plan personalised to your unique health goals which may include diet and lifestyle interventions, herbal medicine and/or nutraceuticals. The ultimate goal is that you achieve your most optimal health and sustainable wholebody wellness.

Naturopathic principles

The six foundational principles of naturopathy include :

  1. First, do no harm (Primum Non Nocere) - It emphasises the importance of using the gentlest, least invasive treatments first, while minimising the risk of side effects or harm. Naturopaths aim to support the body’s natural healing process, avoiding harsh interventions unless absolutely necessary. This means your treatment will be carefully tailored to help you heal in a safe and supportive way.

  2. The healing power of nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae) - An ancient concept that refers to the sophisticated healing mechanisms of the body that creates, maintains and restores health and vitality. Naturopaths help to support the body's healing abilities.

  3. Identify and treat the cause (Tolle Causam) - Whenever possible looking beyond the symptoms to address the underlying root cause. Naturopaths work to understand what’s really causing your health concerns - whether it’s diet, lifestyle, stress, or something deeper - and focus on resolving that.

  4. Doctor as teacher (Docere) - Naturopaths aim to educate and empower you to achieve and maintain your own health and wellbeing. We take the time to explain what's happening in your body/mind, and how the naturopathic interventions can support your health. Having the knowledge, skills and tools helps you become more actively involved in your healing journey.

  5. Treat the whole person (Tolle Totum) - Focuses on viewing you as more than just your symptoms or a specific condition. Naturopaths take into account all aspects of your life - physical, emotional, mental, genetic and environmental factors - when creating a treatment plan. This holistic approach helps support your overall well-being, not just one isolated issue.

  6. Prevention (Preventare) - A focus on overall health, wellness and disease prevention. Naturopaths assess risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease and make appropriate interventions in partnership with you to prevent illness and optimise healthspan.
